Anyone familiar with the origins of Odacité knows that it was created at a difficult time in your life. Can you tell us about that?
Odacité was born out of a promise I made to myself after having breast cancer. I had advanced metastatic breast cancer with a very low chance of survival at five years. I knew that in order to heal I would have to change everything, reinvent my life and promise to remove all toxic ingredients from my environment. The good news is that, against all the odds, I have been completely cancer free for the last 14 years.
And originally, these clean products were just for you?
For my “nontoxic living promise” to happen I had to rethink everything about my life... so I quit my job, sold the big party house in the Hollywood Hills and moved to beautiful, unpolluted Topanga Canyon. I also adopted a raw vegan diet, started yoga and meditation and went back to school to become a health and wellness coach. It was through this “detox” journey that the idea for Odacité was born.
Like most French women, I love skincare and could not find products that married results and purity, so I decided to make them in my kitchen. It was firsthand for me and then my coaching clients noticed that my skin was glowing with a newfound radiance. They asked me what I was using on my skin so I started creating formulas for them.
How did they morph from your personal regimen to become a worldwide cult brand?
By word of mouth! News spread about my custom-made skincare and for three years I only worked with private clients. It was probably the best way to really understand the skin and the many factors that affect its well-being. It got to the point where I realized, this was bigger than just me and needed to take it to the next level. Odacité launched in 2009. It pioneered the clean beauty movement and started a new conversation about beauty, proving that when it comes to skincare you don’t need to sacrifice performance for purity.
You are French, live in California and explore different cultures to source the most effective skincare ingredients. Is it fair to say that you take a very global perspective when it comes to creating your products?
Yes! I’m a firm believer that through the fusion of cultures we can create magic. The DNA of Odacité is of course French skincare meets green California living, but we also integrate ancestral beauty knowledge. For example, ayurvedic herbs like neem, holly basil and turmeric are used for their anti-pollution benefits in our Blue Aura Cleansing Water. Traditional Chinese medicine inspired our Crystal Contour Gua Sha, creating a tool specifically carved to adapt to the morphology of the face. We also bring in crystal vibrations in our Aventurine Kiss Lip Serum, where the applicator is made of green aventurine, the crystal of good luck and opportunities. Our All-Embracing Serum is infused with the protective energy of amethyst, known to remove bad vibrations.
And because beauty also has a lot to do with emotions, our formulas are powered by the aroma-therapeutic benefits of essential oils. So, yes, our approach to skincare is born from the fusion and synergies of many different kinds of beauty knowledge.
What do you say to someone who doesn’t think natural ingredients are potent or effective?
Just like any organ in your body, your skin needs to be fed with the best nature has to provide in order to glow and maintain its youthful appearance. Skincare is just like food: natural, raw, unadulterated, pristine ingredients free of harmful chemicals will create magic in your skin, while respecting the beautiful body you were given.
You take wellness very seriously, even beyond beauty. Tell us about that.
My motto is there is no beauty without health! It’s sometimes hard to carve time for wellness, especially while travelling the world six months of the year. My non-negotiable: a plant-based diet for its amazing anti-inflammatory benefits and wealth of antioxidants, and a yoga/meditation routine that adapts to my day, even if it’s as short as 10 minutes of mediation and a few sun salutations. And, when time permits, I prepare raw food dishes on Sundays, hike in the morning with my dogs, escape at least once a year to a wellness retreat, do a three-day juice cleanse every change of seasons, try a new form of yoga (love aerial yoga), rebound on trampolines... The goal is to make it realistic and fun in my schedule.
How do you want Odacité to make women feel?
Beauty is about confidence and I want Odacité to give women the kind of skin that gives them confidence to go out and conquer the world.
Is there an Odacité best-seller or one product that everyone can use?
Our newly launched Blue Aura Cleansing Water is known as the cleanser with a waiting list! It is an all-natural micellar water that makes cleaning your face quick, effective and delicious without having to rinse. Fabulous for those late nights when you don’t feel like cleansing your face!
What’s next for Odacité?
Our focus is always on creating the best product possible, and sometimes it takes a long time! After five years of research and blending and re-blending so many formulas trying to create an all-natural sunscreen, we will be launching a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen that feels like a moisturizer in May 2020. This formula was worth all the wait and trial and errors. Feels like a moisturizer, works like a sunscreen, let’s the skin breathe and feels hydrated.
What’s the best feedback you’ve had?
A woman who came to an event at an event, came up to me just to give me one of the best hugs I have ever gotten. She said, “Your products changed my life; I use to have terrible eczema and was ashamed of my face. Now my skin is glowing and completely free of any dry patches, don’t know how to thank you.” This is exactly why I do what I do because I know how beautiful skin can make a difference in the way we go through life.
