The Septaway Goes Global for Wellness

We’re not ones to make resolutions per se, but there’s something about a new year that makes us pause – we want to be our best selves for the year to come. To achieve that, we like to focus on our bodies and our minds, seeking out a peaceful sense of calm and state of well-being. These five picks helped us meet our criteria…

Golden Door, California

It’s possibly the most iconic spa in the world and for good reason. There is every kind of gym equipment, exercise class and, of course, tennis, Pilates and pools, but we love this retreat for its gorgeously serene setting: think enchanting Japanese gardens, waterfalls and bamboo groves. The food wows too – beyond fresh, seasonal dishes that are healthy and delicious. Bonus: amenities include workout gear (washed daily for you) and the resort’s signature kimono.

Kamalaya, Thailand

If detoxing is your goal, this is your place. Wellness is the focus here and runs the gamut from achieving your ideal weight and sleep enhancement to yoga synergy and, of course, total body detox. Fully customized programs are also on offer and rates include accommodation – we love the beachside villas and the vistas of Koh Samui.

Grotto Spa, British Columbia

We rate this West Coast Wonder for its varied spa offerings (including traditional manis and pedis) but mostly for its signature grotto mineral pool – warm, blue water rich in natural minerals and trace elements that naturally soothe muscles and detox the body. It’s a day spa but for longer stays, ocean-side rooms are available at the nearby Tigh-Na-Mara resort.

Chablé Resort, Mexico

This is where wellness meets luxury and a bit of indulgence (the resort houses the world’s largest tequila collection). Set in the lush Yucatan jungle, it’s relatively new and a perfect blend of old-world Mayan rituals and modern savvy. And wait till you see the accommodations – contemporary glass-walled villas with pools. Heaven!

Namaste Yoga Safari, Africa

This unique experience melds wellness with adventure. Practicing yoga outdoors is a luxury for those of us living in cold climates, so imagine downward dogging beside the ocean or in the silence of the desert. Retreats are scheduled yearly and need to be booked in advance. The best part? They can be customized so are perfect for everyone, from honeymooners to families and those travelling solo.
